This is not simply the fear of AI taking one's job – though that remains a concern for many. Instead, it is a more insidious worry: that consistent reliance on AI is quietly eroding the very expertise, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills that took years to cultivate. This 'deskilling anxiety' suggests that while AI may make tasks quicker, it could also make our core abilities duller.
The Data on Deskilling Concern
Surveys indicate a notable shift in how workers perceive AI's impact. While 'displacement anxiety' (fear of being replaced entirely) affects approximately 18% of the workforce, particularly in administrative and basic analysis roles, 'deskilling anxiety' affects around 15%, concentrated among mid-career professionals, specialists, and creatives (aimagicx analysis, 2026).
This apprehension is growing. In June 2026, 90% of surveyed job seekers reported concerns about AI, specifically citing issues like AI dependence and the potential loss of problem-solving abilities (HR Dive, 2026). A survey by Adaptavist found that 35% of workers now hoard skills and knowledge due to AI anxiety, indicating a reluctance to fully embrace AI for fear of becoming redundant.
How Skills Can Atrophy
The mechanism behind deskilling anxiety is straightforward. If complex cognitive tasks, such as synthesising information, structuring arguments, or diagnosing problems, are consistently outsourced to AI, the neural pathways and cognitive muscle memory for those tasks may weaken. This is not unlike a physical muscle that atrophies without use. For instance, relying on AI for first drafts might diminish one’s ability to initiate complex writing from a blank page, or using it for data interpretation could reduce critical scrutiny of raw figures.

Strategies for Skill Retention
Maintaining professional sharpness while leveraging AI requires conscious effort. - Do it yourself first: For critical tasks that define your expertise, complete a draft or initial analysis without AI. Use AI afterwards for refinement, editing, or alternative perspectives.
- Use AI as a critic: Instead of asking AI to generate a solution, ask it to critique your solution. Prompt it to identify weaknesses, biases, or gaps in your reasoning.
- Deliberately practice fundamentals: Regularly engage in exercises that hone your core skills, even if AI could perform them. This could mean summarising a complex document by hand, structuring an argument from scratch, or troubleshooting a problem without digital assistance.
- Interrogate AI output: Never accept AI-generated content at face value. Treat it as a starting point. Check facts, question assumptions, and evaluate the logic. This process reinforces your own critical evaluation skills.
Expertise Plus AI Fluency
Far from rendering expertise obsolete, AI presents an opportunity to augment it. Labour market analysis from the Burning Glass Institute (March 2026) suggests that workers who add AI skills to existing domain expertise earn a 56% wage premium over peers with equivalent experience but no AI skills. This indicates that the combination of deep human expertise and AI fluency is a powerful differentiator, not a threat to one's professional standing.
The challenge, then, is not to avoid AI, but to integrate it mindfully. By consciously engaging with core professional skills and using AI as a tool for enhancement and verification, knowledge workers can mitigate deskilling anxiety and instead cultivate a more robust, future-proof skillset.
