Burnout Is Not a Personality

It is an occupational condition with identifiable causes, and treating it as a character trait is how people stay in it for years.

Burnout Is Not a Personality

Somewhere along the way burnout stopped being something that happens to people and became something people are. It gets worn like a temperament — "I''m just always at 90%" — and once it is a personality, nobody has to change anything about the job.

What burnout actually describes

The standard framing has three components: exhaustion that rest does not fix, cynical distance from the work, and a collapsing sense of your own effectiveness. Note what is in that list and what is not. It is defined in relation to work, not to your general disposition. It is an occupational phenomenon.

If a week off fixes it, that was fatigue. Burnout is the thing that is still there on Tuesday of the second week.

The drivers are structural more often than personal

Consistently: unsustainable workload, low control over how work gets done, insufficient reward, unfairness, breakdown of community, and values conflict. Only one of those is meaningfully within an individual's gift on a Tuesday afternoon. This is why "resilience training" as a sole response lands so badly — it assigns the repair job to the person absorbing the damage.

What individuals can still do

Not nothing. Just less than the wellness industry implies.

  • Recover deliberately. Detachment beats distraction. Activities that fully occupy attention — exercise, a craft, a conversation with a person who does not work with you — restore more than scrolling.
  • Defend the boundaries you actually control. Notification schedules, the shutdown ritual, whether you check email in bed.
  • Reduce ambiguity. A surprising amount of exhaustion is the cognitive cost of not knowing what "done" looks like. Ask.
  • Name it accurately, out loud, to someone. Cynicism thrives in private.

What organisations have to do

The rest of it. Workload calibration, decision latitude, functioning teams, and managers who are trained rather than merely promoted. If your workplace''s entire burnout strategy is a meditation subscription and a lunchtime webinar, that is not a wellbeing programme, that is a liability hedge.

The line where this stops being an article's business

Burnout and clinical depression overlap and are not the same thing. Persistent low mood, loss of interest in things outside work, changes to appetite or sleep, or any thoughts of self-harm need a real clinician, not a productivity system. If you are somewhere in that territory, please treat it with the seriousness you would give a physical injury — and use whatever employee assistance or health cover you have. It exists for exactly this.
