Are Ergonomic Keyboards Worth Three Hundred Pounds?
Ergonomic keyboards are frequently marketed as essential tools for desk-based professionals, promising relief from discomfort and prevention of injury, but the evidence for certain designs requires closer examination.

For many desk workers, the keyboard is an indispensable tool, used for hours each day. This constant interaction can, over time, contribute to discomfort in the wrists, hands, and arms, leading to conditions collectively known as repetitive strain injuries (RSIs). In response, the market offers a range of 'ergonomic' keyboards, each claiming to mitigate these risks by promoting a more natural posture.
These devices, often considerably more expensive than standard keyboards, appeal to those seeking solutions to work-related physical strain. However, the term 'ergonomic' encompasses a broad spectrum of designs, and distinguishing between genuinely beneficial features and marketing claims can be challenging. Understanding the underlying principles and available evidence is crucial before making an investment.
The Landscape of Ergonomic Keyboard Designs
Ergonomic keyboards generally aim to reduce pronation (turning the palm downwards), ulnar deviation (bending the wrist towards the little finger), and wrist extension (bending the wrist upwards) – postures associated with increased musculoskeletal strain. Several common designs attempt to achieve this, each with a distinct approach:
- Split Keyboards: These separate the keyboard into two halves, allowing the user to position their hands at shoulder width, reducing ulnar deviation. Some designs offer adjustable angles for tenting (raising the middle of the keyboard) to further reduce pronation.
- Contoured Keyboards: Often featuring a fixed, often wavy or domed shape, these keyboards arrange keys in a way that aims to match the natural curve of the hands, potentially reducing wrist extension and ulnar deviation. Keys may also be sculpted to fit fingertips.
- Vertical Keyboards (or 'Stalactite'/'Stalagmite' designs): Though less common for full keyboards, some ergonomic options incorporate vertical or near-vertical key layouts, significantly reducing forearm pronation by allowing typing with palms facing inwards. This is more often seen in mice than full keyboards.
- Compact Keyboards: While not exclusively marketed as 'ergonomic', removing the numeric keypad can reduce the reach distance to a mouse, potentially decreasing shoulder and arm strain for prolonged mouse users. Many ergonomic keyboards are also compact.
Considering the Evidence Base
While some ergonomic keyboard designs show promise in reducing specific biomechanical stressors, definitive long-term studies proving efficacy for injury prevention remain limited.
Research into the efficacy of ergonomic keyboards has yielded mixed results. Studies have indicated that certain designs, particularly split and highly angled keyboards, can reduce wrist extension and ulnar deviation compared to traditional flat keyboards. For example, a review published in Applied Ergonomics found consistent evidence that split and inclined keyboards can improve forearm posture and reduce muscular activity in the wrist and forearm during typing. However, the direct link between these postural improvements and a reduction in the incidence of musculoskeletal disorders is more difficult to establish, often relying on self-reported comfort or short-term physiological markers rather than long-term injury rates. A systematic review published in the Cochrane Library concluded that there is 'insufficient evidence to recommend the use of alternative keyboards for the prevention or treatment of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders'.
This suggests that while the biomechanical rationale for ergonomic designs often holds up, the impact on complex, multifactorial conditions like RSI is not as straightforward. Factors such as individual typing style, overall workstation setup, work intensity, and psychosocial factors also play significant roles in the development of such conditions. Consequently, an ergonomic keyboard alone may not be a complete solution.
What to Look for and What to Expect
If considering an ergonomic keyboard, focus on designs that specifically address your particular discomfort or postural issues. Pay attention to features such as:
- 1Adjustability: Can you alter the split angle (if applicable), tenting, or wrist rest position to suit your body?
- 2Key Feel: The tactile feedback and actuation force of keys are subjective but important for comfort and preventing excessive finger strain. Mechanical switches may be preferred by some for their clear feedback.
- 3Learning Curve: Significantly different layouts, such as fully split or ortholinear designs, may require a considerable adjustment period. Be prepared for a temporary dip in typing speed.
- 4Integration with Wrist Rests: A good wrist rest, ideally separate from the keyboard, can support neutral wrist posture, but should not be used while typing, only for resting between bursts of activity.
Expect to adapt to a new design. Initial discomfort is sometimes reported, but persistent pain should prompt a re-evaluation of the equipment or posture. Remember, an ergonomic keyboard is one component of a holistic approach to workstation health, which also involves proper chair setup, monitor positioning, and regular breaks. Trying models in person, if possible, can provide valuable insights that specifications alone cannot.
